preheat oven to 350, butter and flour a 10 spring form pan
1. whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in med bowl 2. combine buttermilk and 1/4 cup lemon juice is small bowl 3. in electric mixer, beat butter until smooth then slowly add 2 cups sugar, beat until well blended; beat in eggs one at a time; add lemon peel and vanilla 4. beat in dry ingredients in 4 additions alternately with buttermilk mixture in 3 additions 5. pour into prepared pan, bake until golden brown and slightly cracked on top and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 1 hour 6. in small saucepan combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup lemon juice over low heat until sugar dissolves and syrup forms 7. transfer cake to cooling rack, cool for 15 minutes 8. working in batches, slowly spoon syrup over cake, allowing it to soak in before reapplying 9. completely cool, remove side of pan
